Course Description (Second Year)

GENERAL PATHOLOGY
This subject deals with non-specific pathologic abnormalities in general without specific reference to organ system functioning as the framework for future studies.

CLINICAL PATHOLOGY
The subject deals with appropriate measurements and examinations for detection and diagnosis of disease and interpretation of examinations for particular conditions.

MEDICINE I (Physical Diagnosis)
In this course the students learn to identify the findings in health and disease through the four fundamental methods of physical examination and to analyze and correlate history and physical examination findings in attempting to arrive at a diagnosis.

MICROBIOLOGY
This course deals with the basics of bacterial microbiology and bio-physiology.  Together with these, the following topics of infection, immunity, chemotherapy, anti-microbial action, allergy and hypersensitivity are presented.

PHARMACOLOGY
The subject matter covered are principles of drug action, prescription writing, drug effect on human organ systems and drugs used in the therapy of disease, drug interactions and the preparations available.

PARASITOLOGY
The course gives general information on the essential nematodes, trematodes, cestodes and protozoa with emphasis on life cycle of these parasites and their relationship to the patho-physiology and the diagnosis of the disease they produce.

PREVENTIVE MEDICINE AND COMMUNITY HEALTH II (Community Diagnosis)
This course deals with the measurement of health and disease patterns in the Philippines through community diagnosis of a typical rural community.

PEDIATRICS I (Developmental Norms by Age Groups)
This course emphasizes on growth, development, and nutritional disorders of the newborn.

SURGERY I (Principles of Surgery/Practical and Minor Surgery)
This course consists of the principles of surgery and the indications, procedures, as well as their complications.  It covers a study of fluids and electrolytes, homeostasis, incision and drainage, cauterization, sutures and ligatures.

PSYCHIATRY II (basics of Psychiatry)
This course deals with the study of the various mental mechanisms.  Emphasis is placed on the effects of anxiety and the defenses against it.  Brief reviews of the various schools of though in patho-physiology are introduced together with the concepts of neurotic and psychotic behavior.

PRINCIPLES OF MEDICAL PRACTICE II (Medical Economics)
The subject teaches the students the different aspects of medical economics and basic concepts of hospital and health care management.  This is based on the concept that the medical practice into which the graduates will go, is a multidisciplinary activity requiring proper management.

CHRISTIAN PHYSICIAN II (Bioethics Proper)
It studies the human person and the fundamental moral categories governing his/her actions. It examines the key issues in the current bioethical discourse from a Christian perspective. It studies the basic principles and application in view of the Beginning-of-Life issues.
